How Does it Work?

At no cost to the facility, PSC MedSupply staffs your clinic with a pharmacy representative who, with proper client authorization, acts as the client’s pharmacy benefits manager. The PSC MedSupply pharmacy rep faxes prescriptions to the PSC pharmacy located in Greensboro, NC. Medications are filled and shipped to either the client’s home or back to the clinic for pick up.

What if the Patient or our Medical Staff needs to Consult with a Pharmacist?

PSC utilizes Web Cams to get Medical Staff, and/or clients talking face to face with the pharmacist right from the clinic via webcams in our pharmacy. This way, a pharmacist is available to answer questions about drug interactions and potential side effects of medications. It’s like having a pharmacist inside your mental health facility.

FACT: Our PAP software combined with our PAP staff constitutes the largest single processor of drug applications at every major pharmaceutical company in the industry.

Who Might we want to be Involved with the Decision of whether to bring PSC MedSupply into the clinic?

It’s been our experience that the program works best when Medical staff is involved in the decision-making. The earlier on in the process Doctors, Nurses and other staff get involved, the better. Since they work very closely on a day to day basis with our rep and pharmacy staff we need them on board to make the program a success!

What about Patient Confidentiality?

HIPAA documentation is signed by each client who receives our services and allows PSC to share and receive relevant information with the clinic, drug companies and other relevant agencies in the pursuit of obtaining the client’s medications. What happens once the Agreement is Ratified?

  • Establishing phone, fax, and high speed internet for PSC MedSupply use in the identified space may pose a delay, so ordering the phone/fax and internet set up begins immediately after contract signing.
  • PSC MedSupply will begin a hiring search in the $10-14/hr range depending on location. We welcome your staff recommendations and often, when appropriate, hire someone who is currently employed by the clinic.
  • Once we have these 2 critical pieces identified we will set the start date.
  • Before PSC actually begins enrolling patients, it is beneficial to meet with all clinic staff to present the details of our services.
  • Depending on your state, just before the established start up date, all of the indigent medications in the clinic’s possession are turned over to PSC MedSupply and sent to the pharmacy for dispensing.

How will we Monitor how it’s Going once PSC has Started?

Usually, the best way to accomplish this is to ask the clients and clinic staff for their feedback. We are happy to help distribute a written survey as well.

How can you Provide such a Great Service at no cost to the clinic?

When clients receive insurance benefits we are able to bill insurance companies for the medications. We must be able to help enough insured clients (Medicaid/ Medicare D or private insurance) to cover the costs of obtaining free medications for indigent clientele.

What if PSC does not get enough Insured clientele?

We’ll keep you abreast of our progress after start up and if we’re falling short of our operational goal, we’ll work to remedy the situation.

What about after hours Emergency meds?

Unlike most pharmacies that are not open 24hours, we handle these rare situations in a personal manner. As a specialized pharmacy that understands the needs of the mentally ill, we practice to omit potential emergencies by acting proactively. Pharmacy reps automatically call clients who have refills due each week and order their medications ahead of time. In approved cases, we’ll even reimburse insured clients or staff when they have to use cash at another pharmacy over the weekend in an emergency situation.

Will PSC handle the smaller Satellite clinics?

Possibly, depending on the population, number of clients on the daily med appointment schedule, the remoteness of the clinic location, and employee availability. Each clinic is looked at individually.

Can PSC MedSupply assist local Group Homes or intensive treatment teams with their medication needs?

Yes, depending on the number of clients, the number of meds and any other special needs these groups have. Bubble packaging and Medication Administration records are available for these contracted groups depending on their size.

Sounds too good to be true, what are the potential pitfalls?

Medication management is a constantly changing landscape. We don’t have control over the requirements or changes that drug companies make to their assistance programs, nor that the government makes to Medicaid or Medicare D. We just want to be your in house expert on identifying and managing these changes for our mutual clients.

What inspires PSC MedSupply, LLC?

PSC MedSupply is a company with a big heart. The Company's partners all have mental health histories within their families and were attending a conference one afternoon when the idea for PSC MedSupply was born. As a pharmacist and an RN, Rudy Rutter and Penny Bates were talking with the Medical Director of a mental health facility in Oklahoma City who was describing his need for help in obtaining medications for the indigent population while facing severe budget restrictions. He also mentioned the transportation and other challenges that the typical indigent mental health client faces. Rudy and Penny told the Medical Director that they could help, they would find a way, and so they did. Mark Fitte later joined their team as a salesman with a masters degree in Health Care Administration in order to get the company off the ground and into the mental health arena starting in Greensboro, NC where our pharmacy is currently located. Today PSC MedSupply is helping more than 16,000 Mental health clients in 4 states and in 2007 filled prescriptions for nearly $9,000,000 worth of free medications.

PSC MedSupply, LLC (PSC) was founded in September of 2003 by Dr. Rudy Rutter, Penny Bates, RN and Mark Fitte, MSHA. Their vision was to apply institutional pharmacy and managed care principles to the Mental Healthcare community. The founders have 5 years experience prior to PSC in setting up “Closed Door” pharmacies for residential care facilities in Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, and Mississippi. It is the goal of PSC to assist the mental health community with their budgetary problems while insuring prescription benefits to the indigent population. The concept was proven in Oklahoma and is now active in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina.

PSC MedSupply’s Mission: To make life better for Community Mental Health Centers and the individuals they serve.
